One Dream

Dreams. We all have dreams. There are so many different kinds of dreams in the world. Dreams about careers, money, hobbies, studies, family, friends, the past, the future and even the present! There was also Inception, the hotly-talked about movie not so long ago, which talks about a dream within a dream within another dream. (Actually, the movie was about stealing and planting ideas from a human’s mind by entering dreams.) Then at the stage of life that I am at now, I frequently hear people asking “what is your dream job?”, or “what do you always dream of doing after you graduate?” Having said all that, those are not the dreams I have. I seldom dream about my future job, and obviously I have never thought about entering another person’s dream. But I would like to talk about a simple little dream that I have ever since I started my university education.

Recently, friends of mine who are currently in their final year started discussing about grad trips. These are trips where friends go together when they have completed their final education before stepping into the work life. Their discussion got me excited for a while because since my freshman year in university, I have been yearning to go on an overseas trip with my friends. Mind you, I am not talking about just any trip (e.g. trips to Malaysia for a day), but a full-coverage overseas trip filled with fun and laughter and most importantly, with my friends.
Some might wonder what the big deal is. To me, it is. I have been to a few places with my family before, but never with friends. The closest I have been to fulfilling this dream was when I went on a one-day Malaysia trip with a few university friends. As I have spent the past 4 years living on school campus, I always wonder what it is like to transfer the same hostel environment to a new and unfamiliar place abroad. How is it like to check into an accommodation, to live in new surroundings, to explore new places and to discover new things with friends?

That is not to say I did not have a lot of fun when I went overseas with my family. My rare overseas trips with my family have so far been memorable. All have been eye-openers, perhaps because we do not travel often. But I do not become “crazy” when I am out with my family. The only time when I play and have fun crazily is with friends in hostel or outside home. I really want to experience spending time away from Singapore with my friends. In Singapore, there might be many different activities to indulge in. But the main few are always watching movies, eating, shopping, eating, maybe playing sports and then eating again. It should be quite an experience spending days exploring a totally unfamiliar venue with the same people whom you go crazy with in Singapore.
Well, having talked so much about what I dream about, the main obstacle to fulfilling that dream is to actually find the people and a suitable time. And that, frankly speaking, is the biggest obstacle. I have a feeling I will not be able to fulfill this dream when I graduate at the end of this year, or even in May/June next year when most of my friends graduate. Looks like I have to wait till another time, when all of us are working and have even busier schedules than now. Which means the obstacle just gets bigger and bigger and bigger… … Sighhh.
