I was sitting in a cab on the way back one day when I had this interesting discussion with my colleague that struck me thinking for the whole day.

Ever since I’ve graduated from school and working in a relatively prestigious company, I realized how different life in a working environment can be as compared to a free-willed one at school.

You will never find yourself withholding your opinions just because he or she is your superior instead, you are free to react according to however you feel like it at that point in time.

In short, your personality shines more in school while at work, it is constantly being suppressed.

You don’t express your angst because you respect your bosses, or rather it’s only politically correct to be this way.

You don’t show them how you truly feel about things because you are afraid of offending them or dangerously treading on their ego.

Conclusively, you find yourself immersing in a totally different environment from school where people are less truthful with themselves and to others.

Perhaps, some are right to correct me in saying that hypocrites are everywhere and you can find them in school too!

But the crux of it all remains that, you will always find more sincere people who can more able to behave the way they are in school than at work. Moreover, when you are schooling, friends are treated as pillars of support and strength while trust puts you in a vulnerable position of being back-stabbed and hurt at work. Hence, you would choose to be truthful to your friends because you care and perhaps, you would rather not be too honest with your colleagues because you are afraid of what they might tell others and how it could jeopardize your job and income.

I feel that there is not one way to balance truth and respect, rather than seeking for the single optimum point, I believe that we should always constantly assess the balance to suit the situation.

Therefore, I foresee that you will find yourself constantly in a struggle to balance the scale of truth and respect.

Like what people love to quote “change is the only thing constant”.

I couldn’t agree more.
